Free Treatment and Training on Asthma, Eczema and Allergies

Eczema Trust Zimbabwe in Partnership with the Ministry of Health will be conducting a free clinic in Norton, Mashonaland west province. the clinic is aimed at empowering communities, raising awareness and providing of training to health care providers on these conditions. the  clinic will be held on the 6th of July 2013 at Katanga clinic in Norton. a team of Specialist Doctors will be treating people for free.


Norton is a fishing town situated about 35Km from the capital city Harare and falls under Mashonaland west Province. majority of the residence in Norton depend on selling fish as their  source of income. most white meat including fish is considered to be cheap compared to other meat. Eczema Trust Zimbabwe has established that there is a lot of myths and misconceptions associated with eating fish as a result people who develop different skin conditions associate their conditions to eating fish. This exercise will be used as documented evidence to establish the truth surrounding that most skin diseases.


In an interview held recently with the Katanga Clinic officials it was also established that they meet almost 80% of both adults and children suffering from skin conditions every moth during their clinic days, this has necessitated the need to conduct the exercise in Norton.


Due to limited resources the exercise will be a one day program and will see Doctors and other health care providers taking part.

Asthma is often divided into at least two classes that is extrinsic asthma type and intrinsic asthma type. On the other hand others would introduce another class naming it mixed asthma. This can make it a questionable three classes of asthma.

Extrinsic Type of Asthma Extrinsic asthma now also known as allergic asthma is generally brought about by allergens like pollen particles, etc. Intrinsic Type of Asthma Extrinsic asthma is normally brought about by adrenal glands disorder and/or mental disorder such as emotional stress, nerves and anxiety.


A different school of thought further subdivides intrinsic type of asthma into classifications like exercise-induced, occupational type, etc. The category of asthma basically depends on what can be considered to be resulting in the attack. Whether it is external controllable things or something that is not external to the asthma victim the character of the attack are similar. That is to say you will never tell if someone has an intrinsic type of asthma attack or the extrinsic type. Mostly the discomforts are similar. Both Extrinsic and Intrinsic Combined Mixed asthma is a hybrid of intrinsic and extrinsic asthma. Mixed asthma asthma victim react to particular allergies but also are activated by other intrinsic group of stimulants.


It is a two- step issue – When an individual is affected by asthma, inflammation is experienced in the bronchi and it becomes red and swollen. When the air passages get inflamed, the asthma victim becomes extra-sensitive to different things, which may intensify asthma. How Can You Tell If It’s An Attack It is a respiratory disease brought on by allergies; it can be characterized or its presence might be felt by symptoms such as chest constriction, labored breathing and consistent coughing.

Asthma Remedies

Asthma is an ancient Greek word meaning ” panting or short- drawn breath.” It is the most troublesome of the respiratory diseases. The asthma patient gets frequent attacks of breathlessness in between which he is completely normal.


Asthma Symptoms
Patients suffering from asthma appear to be gasping for breath. Actually, they have more trouble exhaling than inhaling because the air passages of the small bronchi become clogged and constricted with mucus, thus making it difficult for the patient to breathe out. All asthmatics have more difficulty at night, especially during sleep. The onset of asthma is either gradual or abrupt. Sudden onsets are often preceded by a spell of coughing which may be associated with itching of the chin, the back of the neck or chest. When the onset is gradual, the attack is usually brought on by respiratory infection. A severe attack causes an increase in heartbeat and respiratory rates and the patient feels restless and fatigued. There may be coughing, tightness in the chest, profuse sweating and vomiting. There may also
be abdominal pain, especially if coughing is severe. Foggy weather aggravates the symptoms. An asthmatic attack begins when the bronchial tubes in the lungs become constricted. The tubes having become narrow, the inhaled air becomes trapped in the tiny air sacs at the end of the tubes, making the release of breath difficult. The wheezing sound identified with asthma is produced by the air being pushed through the narrowed bronchi.


Asthma Causes
Mainly bronchial in its symptoms (Asthma bronchitis), asthma is caused by a variety of factors. For many it is an allergic condition resulting from the reaction of the system to the weather, food, drugs, perfumes and other irritants which vary with different individuals. Allergies to dust are the most common. Some persons are sensitive to the various forms of dust like cotton dust, wheat dust and paper dust, some pollens, animal hair, fungi and insects, especially cockroaches. Foods which generally cause allergic reactions are wheat, eggs, milk, chocolates, beans, potato, pork and beef. For others, asthma may result from the abnormal body chemistry involving the system’s enzymes or a defect in muscular action within the lungs. Quite often, however, asthma is precipitated by a combination of allergic and non- allergic factors including emotional tension, air pollution, infections and hereditary factors. It has been estimated that when both parents have asthma or hay fever, in 75 to 100 per cent cases, the offspring also has allergic reactions.
Asthma Treatments
Modern medical system has not been able to find a cure for this crippling disease. Drugs and vaccines have only limited value in alleviating symptoms. Most of these are habit forming and the dose has to be increased from time to time to give the same amount of relief. The frequent introduction of drugs in the system, while giving only temporary relief, tends to make asthma chronic and incurable. Allergy – which is the immediate cause of asthma – itself is an indication of lowered resistance and internal disharmony caused by faulty eating and bad habits. This is the root cause and the real cure lies in a return to nature.

The natural way treatment of asthma consists of stimulating the functioning of slack excretory organs, adopting appropriate diet patterns to eliminate morbid matter and reconstruct the body, and practicing yogasanas, yogic kriyas and pranayamas to permit proper assimilation of food and to strengthen the lungs, digestive system and circulatory organs. The patient should be given an enema to clean the colon and prevent auto-intoxication. Mud-packs applied to the abdomen will relieve the fermentation caused by undigested food and will promote intestinal peristalsis. Wet packs should be applied to the chest to relieve the congestion of the lungs and strengthen them. The patient should be made to perspire through steam bath, hot foot bath, hot hip bath and sun bath. This will stimulate the skin and relieve congested lungs. The patient should fast for a few days on lemon juice with honey and thereafter resort to a fruit juice diet to nourish the system and eliminate the toxins. Gradually, solid foods can be included. The patient should, however, avoid the common dietic errors. Ideally, his diet should contain a limited quantity of carbohydrates, fats and proteins which are acid-forming foods, and a liberal quantity of alkaline foods consisting of fresh fruits, green vegetables and germinated gram. Foods which tend to produce phelgm such as rice, sugar, lentils and curds as also fried and other difficult- to- digest foods should be avoided. Breakfast may consist of prunes, orange or berries or a few black raisins with honey. Lunch and dinner should consist of a salad of raw vegetables such as cucumber, lettuce, tomato, carrot and beets, one or two lightly cooked green vegetables and wheat bread. The last meal should preferably be taken before sunset or at least two hours before going to bed.
Asthamtics should always eat less than their capacity. They should eat slowly, chewing their food properly. They should drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day, but should avoid taking water or any liquid with meals. Spices, chillies and pickles, too much tea and coffee should also be avoided.
Asthma, particularly when the attack is severe, tends to destroy the appetite. IN such cases, do not force the patient to eat. He should be kept on fast till the attack is over. He should, however, take a cup of warm water every two hours. An enema taken at that time will be very beneficial.
Honey is considered highly beneficial in the treatment of asthma. It is said that if a jug of honey is held under the nose of an asthma patient and he inhales the air that comes into contact with the honey, he starts breathing easier and deeper. The effect lasts for about an hour or so. This is because honey contains a mixture of ‘higher’ alcohols and ethereal oils and the vapors given off by them are soothing and beneficial to the asthma patient. Honey usually brings relief whether the air flowing over it is inhaled or whether it is eaten or taken either in milk or water. It thins out accumulated mucous and helps its elimination from the respiratory passages. It also tones up the pulmonary parenchyma and thereby prevents the production of mucous in future. Some authorities recommend one year old honey for respiratory disease.
Another effective remedy for asthma is garlic. The patient should be given daily garlic cloves boiled in thirty gms of milk as a cure for early stage of asthma. Steaming ginger tea with minced garlic cloves in it, can also help to keep the problem under control and should be taken both in the morning and evening. Turmeric is also regarded as an effective remedy for bronchial asthma. The patient should be given a teaspoonful of turmeric powder with a glass of milk two or three times daily. It acts best when taken on an empty stomach.
During the attack, mustard oil mixed with little camphor should be massaged over the back of the chest. This will loosen up phelgm and ease breathing. The patient should also inhale steam from the boiling water with caraway seeds, known as ajwain in the vernacular. It will dilate the bronchial passage.
The patient should also follow the other laws of nature. Air sun and water are great healing agents. Regular fasting once a week, an occasional enema, breathing exercises, fresh air, dry climate, light exercises and a correct posture go a long way in treating the disease.
The patient should perform yogic kriyas such as jalneti, vamandhouti and yogic asanas such as ekpaduttanasana, yogamudra, sarvangasana, padmasana, bhujangasana, dhanurasana, vakrasana, ardh-matsyendrasan, shalabhasan, paschimottanasana and shavasana. Pranayamas like kapalbhati, anuloma-viloma, ujjayi, surbyabhedana and bhramari are also highly beneficial.
The patient should avoid dusty places, exposure to cold, foods to which he is sensitive, mental worries and tensions. Asthmatic should be made to feel that they are not sick, and with slight adjustments, can live a full life.

Childhood Obesity at Age 8 Linked to Asthma, Allergies (ContributorNetwork)

Children who are overweight by 8 years old were found to have higher incidence of asthma and allergic sensitivity, according to a study published in the American Academy of Pediatrics. Here are specifics on study findings and how they impact parent decisions.


Asthma and childhood obesity studies


In October, Science Daily reported obese children are twice as likely to have asthma as nonobese children. In the Pediatrics study, pediatric allergy and asthma researchers from Norway and Sweden looked at how changes in a child’s weight status may affect his predisposition to asthma allergy.


Weight gain in 7-, 8-year-olds linked to asthma problems


The study revealed those with over-85 percent body mass indexes were no more prone to asthma at 12 to 18 months or when they were tested at age 4. By age 8, children with a high BMI were at greater risk for asthma regardless of whether they had been overweight in the earlier years or not. Children were more at risk for wheezing or other problems with inhalant allergies if they were overweight at age 8.


Childhood obesity, asthma parenting implications


Study authors conclude parents should be mindful of asthma in children who have a number of risk factors in combination: BMIs over 85 percent, exposure to secondhand smoke, maternal history of obesity or parents history of asthma or allergy. Weight problems at or after ages 8 to 10 seem to predispose children to other problems as well. In 2008, Science Daily reported on a study by Kansas State University that found children with sedentary lives and high body fat had more asthma-like symptoms after exercise. In 2010, a study from West Virginia University found children of normal weight who don’t get a balanced diet or proper exercise are at greater risk for asthma. Study authors recommended parents improve nutrition and boost fitness levels, especially in school years to reduce asthma risk.


Ages 8 to 10 critical for obesity, asthma prevention


A Pediatrics study underscored the concern for obesity at age 8. Forty percent of kids begin school in the 85th percentile. Significant weight gain after ages 8 to 10, especially if not accompanied by equally significant height gain, is an indicator of lifelong obesity problems. Study authors concluded parents should build good nutrition habits early and monitor weight gain at all ages but the time for teaching good nutrition and fitness was in the early school years.

Pathophysiology for Asthma

• Asthma is increased bronchial reactivity in the lower respiratory tract to various stimuli, which produces episodic bronchospasm and airway obstruction and inflammation.
• It is the most common respiratory disease in children. In younger children, it affects twice as many boys as girls and evens out by adolescence.
• Immunologic/allergic reaction results in histamine production causing edema of the mucus membrane, spasm of the smooth muscle of bronchi and bronchioles, and accumulation of secretions.
• Asthma can be intrinsic (allergen is not obvious) or extrinsic (results from sensitivity to specific external allergens).


Etiology:
• Extrinsic asthma: exposure to pollens, animal dander, house dust or mold, feather pillows, silky materials, food additives.
• Intrinsic asthma: irritants, emotional stress, fatigue, endocrine changes, temperature and humidity changes, and exposure to noxious fumes.


Precipitating/risk factors:
• Allergen
• Upper airway infection
• Sudden change in temperature or weather
• Exercise, anxiety, excessive coughing, or laughing


Signs and Symptoms:
• Sudden dyspnea, wheezing, and tightness in the chest
• Coughing that produces thick, clear, or yellow sputum
• Tachypnea and use of accessory respiratory muscles
• Rapid pulse, profuse perspiration, hyperresonant lung fields, diminished breath sounds
• Barrel chest appearance from chronic air trapping
• Irritability from hypoxia


Diagnosis:
• Physical examination
• Chest X-ray: hyperinflated lungs with air trapping and local atelectasis during attacks, normal during remission
• Sputum: presence of Cruschmann’s spirals (casts of airways), eosinophils
• Skin testing for specific allergens may be necessary if the client lacks history of allergy


Treatment:
• Treatment is usually tailored to individual client’s need and focuses on identifying and avoiding predisposing factors. Desensitization of specific antigen may be helpful, but is not effective in persistent asthma.
• Emergency treatment: Oxygen therapy, corticosteroids, and bronchodilators such as subcutaneous epinephrine, IV theophylline, and inhaled agents such as metaproterenol, albuterol, and ipratropium
• Medication:
—Bronchodilators
—Beta-adrenergic agonists: metered does inhaler—children will need spacers, nebulizer—for infants and toddlers, and rescue drugs for acute attacks.
—Corticosteroids: oral for persistent wheezing, inhaled by MDI or nebulizer, IV in the hospital
—Nonsteroidal anti-inflamatory agents: nedocromil, cromolyn sodium, and leukotriene inhibitors
—Other commonly used medications are as follows:
â–  Rapid-acting epinephrine
â–  Aminophylline
â–  Terbutaline
â–  Theophylline
â–  Corticosteroids


Step Approach to Asthma Management
Step 1 Long-term control: none
Rescue (Short-term control): short-acting bronchodilator (inhaled beta 2 agonist); if used more than biw; long-term control required.


Step 2 Long-term control: daily anti-inflammatory: low dose inhaled corticosteroid or cromolyn or nedocromil
Rescue: short-acting bronchodilator (inhaled beta 2 agonist); if used daily or with increased frequency, additional long-term therapy is needed.


Step 3 Long-term control: daily anti-inflammatory: medium dose inhaled corticosteroid or low to medium dose inhaled corticosteroid plus long-acting bronchodilator (inhaled or oral). If needed, medium to high dose inhaled corticosteroid plus long-acting bronchodilator.
Rescue: short-acting bronchodilator (inhaled beta 2 agonist); if used daily or with increased frequency, improved long-term therapy is needed.
—High-dose inhaled corticosteroid plus long-acting inhaled bronchodilator or oral corticosteroid (2 mg/kg/d) and long-acting beta 2 agonist tablets.
—Rescue: inhaled short-acting beta 2 agonist
• Place the client on semi-Fowler’s position
• Administer oxygen
• Encourage diagrammatic breathing
• Administer medication and IV therapy as ordered
• Provide humidification and hydration to loosen secretions
• Monitor for respiratory distress
• Provide chest percussion and postural drainage once symptoms improve
• If the attack was caused by exertion, have the client sit down, rest, and sip warm water if not contraindicated
• For status asthmaticus, humidified oxygen to achieve full saturation; large, frequent doses of inhaled short-acting beta 2 agonists; continuous treatment with bronchodilators until clinical improvement or toxic side effects occur; subcutaneous epinephrine for those refractive to beta 2 agonists


Panchakarma for Asthma Treatment


Asthma, or as it is called in ayurveda, the Tamaka Swasa Roga is a disease characterized by wheezing, blocking of the respiratory tract, and various other problems related to breathing. There are no cures for asthma in modern medicine. Tamaka Swasa Roga is a disease of kapha, according to ancient Indian medicines. Asthma is a result of the problems in the Shleksha kapha, the kapha that runs through heart and the lungs. Though it is the major cause, vata and pitta doshas can also result in asthma. Apart from hereditary, the modern lifestyle, with the pollution, toxic food, and lack of fresh air has made it one of the most common diseases from around the world. Climate changes, temperature differences, smoking etc. Also result in the exponential increase of this disease.


Panchakarma chikitsa is the method of treatment used to remove the toxins that result in asthma from the body. It is divided into five. The first part is Vamana or medicated emesis (vomiting). The second is known as Virechana or by the use of a cathartic to stimulate evacuation of the bowels. The third one is Vasti or medicated enema, The fourth one Nasya, a process in which the medicine is provided through nose and the fifth one is Rakthamoksha or bloodletting.

The Panchakarma methods used in Asthma treatment are the following

1)      Dhoomapanam- A method in which medical smoke is inhaled and exhaled to cure asthma.

2)      Abhyangam- Body massage from head to toe, which goes on for about an hour, using medicated oils, to make the body ready for detoxification.

3)      Takradhara- Dhara using curd on forehead.

4)      Swedanam or medicinal perspiration.

5)      Vasthi

6)      Vamanam

7)      Virechanam

 After panchakarma chikitsa, the toxins are removed from the body. The fluid regulation is then done through Rasayana chikitsa, to bring the doshas to a balance. These may include Padhya, Medicatons and Yoga.


Allergies and Asthma - How Indoor Air Quality Can Affect Your Child in School

It is very interesting how some children can be doing very well in school, all A’s and then they change schools. This is a common story we hear from parents about their children with Asthma and Allergies. It seems that the Indoor Air Quality is definitely affecting their performance at school. When a child is doing good and then all of a sudden their grades are dropping, what caused this is the question.


One Mom was concerned and asked us to check the school. When you walk into the child’s classroom, you could smell mold immediately. Usually, a person that is in an area that has mold will not smell it because you become masked over to the odor in a short period of time. In other words, you can not smell it anymore. The child was an “A” student till he went to this school and then the problems started. The child reported that he was having concentration problems and his Asthma Attacks started on a regular basis.


This child was one of the fortunate one’s and had a teacher who cared about him. After we inspected the classroom, the teacher informed the Principle and they got right on the problem. The mold was in the children’s bathroom. It was remediated by a licensed Microbial Contractor who was certified by the Indoor Air Quality Association. The Microbial Remediation was done over a weekend with no disruption of the class.


According to the EPA, Indoor Air Quality can affect a child’s ability to learn and increase absence from school. In studies done by the EPA, it was learned that poor Indoor Air Quality may directly reduce a child’s ability to perform specific mental tasks requiring concentration, calculation, or memory. This information only reinforces the effect of mold on children with Allergies and Asthma, and their ability to concentrate in a classroom with mold nearby.


The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has published a guide which addresses indoor air quality in schools. By applying no-cost or low-cost approaches outlined in the IAQ Tools for Schools (IAQ TfS) Action Kit, schools can find cost-effective means to make the school environment more conducive to improved health and performance of teachers and students.


In conclusion, children with Allergies and Asthma can be affected by poor Indoor Air Quality. Their grades may change because of poor concentration. Mold has been shown to affect individuals with Asthma and Allergies due to their Compromised Immune Systems. As a parent, you must be proactive to protect your child from poor Indoor Air Quality in their classroom settings.

Why does flu trigger asthma?

When children with asthma get the flu, they often land in the hospital gasping for air. Researchers at Children’s Hospital Boston have found a previously unknown biological pathway explaining why influenza induces asthma attacks. Studies in a mouse model, published online May 29 by the journal Nature Immunology, reveal that influenza activates a newly recognized group of immune cells called natural helper cells – presenting a completely new set of drug targets for asthma. If activation of these cells, or their asthma-inducing secretions, could be blocked, asthmatic children could be more effectively protected when they get the flu and possibly other viral infections, says senior investigator Dale Umetsu, MD, PhD, of Children’s Division of Immunology.
Although most asthma is allergic in nature, attacks triggered by viral infection tend to be what put children in the hospital, reflecting the fact that this type of asthma isn’t well controlled by existing drugs.
“Virtually 100 percent of asthmatics get worse with a viral infection,” says Umetsu. “We really didn’t know how that happened, but now we have an explanation, at least for influenza.”
Natural helper cells were first, very recently, discovered in the intestines and are recognized to play a role in fighting parasitic worm infections as part of the innate immune system (our first line of immune defense).
“Since the lung is related to the gut – both are exposed to the environment – we asked if natural helper cells might also be in the lung and be important in asthma,” Umetsu says.
Subsequent experiments, led by first authors Ya-Jen Chang, PhD, and Hye Young Kim, PhD, in Umetsu’s lab, showed that the cells are indeed in the lung in a mouse model of influenza-induced asthma, but not in allergic asthma. The model showed that influenza A infection stimulates production of a compound called IL-33 that activates natural helper cells, which then secrete asthma-inducing compounds.
“Without these cells being activated, infection did not cause airway hyperreactivity, the cardinal feature of asthma,” Umetsu says. “Now we can start to think of this pathway as a target – IL-33, the natural helper cell itself or the factors it produces.”
Personalized medicine in asthma?
The study adds to a growing understanding of asthma as a collection of different processes, all causing airways to become twitchy and constricted. “In mouse models we’re finding very distinct pathways,” Umetsu says.
Most asthma-control drugs, such as inhaled corticosteroids, act on the best-known pathway, which involves immune cells known as TH2 cells, and which is important in allergic asthma. However, Umetsu’s team showed in 2006 that a second group of cells, known as natural killer T-cells (NKT cells), are also important in asthma, and demonstrated their presence in the lungs of asthma patients. NKT cells, they showed, can function independently of TH2 cells, for example, when asthma is induced with ozone, a major component of air pollution. Compounds targeting NKT cells are now in preclinical development.
The recognition now of a third pathway for asthma, involving natural helper cells, may reflect the diversity of triggers for asthma seen in patients.
“Clinically, we knew there were different asthma triggers, but we thought there was only one pathway for asthma,” Umetsu says, adding that all of the identified pathways can coexist in one person. “We need to understand the specific asthma pathways present in each individual with asthma and when they are triggered, so we can give the right treatment at the right time.”

Heightened Immunity To Colds Makes Asthma Flare-Ups Worse, U-M Research Shows

Tempering the immune response — rather than enhancing it — in asthma patients might be a better strategy when combating cold symptoms

People often talk about “boosting” their immunity to prevent and fight colds. Nutritional supplements, cold remedies and fortified foods claim to stave off colds by augmenting the immune system.


A new University of Michigan study shows this strategy might actually be flawed. The results may hold important implications for individuals with asthma, who often experience life-threatening flare-ups due to infections with cold viruses.


The study, using a novel mouse model, shows that, in the airways, the immune response to the common cold is actually maladaptive. Mice that were engineered to have a reduced innate immune response to the common cold actually showed less – not more – airway inflammation and bronchoconstriction (airway spasm) following infection.


The results of this study appeared online ahead of print in the journal PLoS Pathogens, currently available online. Marc B. Hershenson, M.D., professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases and director of the division of pediatric pulmonology, is the study’s senior author.


“You often hear that people want to boost their immunity to prevent and fight colds,” says Hershenson. “However, boosting the immune response could increase inflammation. Up to now there have been no convincing data supporting the theory that the immune response might be deleterious. In our study, we offer the first direct evidence that limiting the immune response reduces the manifestations of rhinovirus infection.”


“In our model, cold-induced asthma flare-ups were caused by the body’s immune response to the virus, not the virus itself. Chemicals produced by the immune system inflame cells and tissues, causing asthma symptoms such as cough and wheeze,” Hershenson explained.


Hershenson and his group hypothesized that limiting the immune response to viral infection would actually reduce their symptoms. Using a rhinovirus 1B, a cold virus strain that replicates in mouse lungs, they infected mice deficient in MDA5 and TLR3 – two receptors that trigger the protective defenses of the immune system against viruses and other pathogens.


MDA5-deficient mice showed a delayed defensive response to the infection, leading to a small increase in the level of virus in the lungs. Nevertheless, these mice showed less airway inflammation and bronchoconstriction following infection compared to wild-type mice. TLR3-deficient mice also showed diminished airway responses.


In addition, MDA5- and TLR3-null mice that were made asthmatic by exposure to allergen showed decreased airway inflammatory and contractile responses in response to rhinovirus infection compared to normal mice. These results suggest that, in the context of rhinovirus infection, reducing the mouse’s innate immune system led to reduced inflammatory signaling pathways and reduced airways inflammation and hyper-responsiveness.


“This study shows that, once you have a cold, elements of the immune response actually make the symptoms worse,” Hershenson adds. “A better strategy might be to modulate the immune response in asthma patients with colds.”

Asthma Sucks... aka near death experience for my dh

What a week (actually, last week… I started writing this a week ago). It started off with an early morning trip to Target to take Jay to work by 4:30a.m.  Not three hours later and Jay almost left this bodily domain.


About 7:15, the phone rings, waking me from my nap between dropping Jay off at work and picking him up from work.  It was Jay’s job coach, L. He said that Jay was having an asthma attack. I quickly found out that it was a major attack, and the ambulance was on its way to get him. So I told him to tell the ambulance to take him to the university hospital (WAS the one hospital that he’d never stayed in, also the closest one to his work), and that I was on my way. In the ER, I met L. for the first time, and he explained everything that he knew about the asthma attack while we waited to be let back to the back.  Jay had been working for about 2 hours when his chest started to feel tight.  He decided to take his break and headed to the break room and used his puffer.  The puffer wasn’t really working for him.  That’s where L. found him and offered to take him home.  They started out of the building, and Jay’s breathing got worse and worse.  By the time L. pulled his car around to the front door, Jay was bent over and couldn’t speak.  He held up 9-1-1 with his fingers.  L. went in and told the manager, who called the ambulance while L. went back out to Jay. 


Once in the ER, they tried the bi-pap machine on him.  It wasn’t working, so after awhile, the ER doc told me they wanted to intubate him.  I agreed to it.  So L. and I had to leave the room while they did that.  I called his parents at that time to let them know what was happening, since it was so bad at that point.  I also called the A/C guy that was supposed to come out to the house that day (great timing, eh?).  He was fine with working in the house without me there; said they did it often.  I’d had the forethought to leave a key under the downspout catch.  So I told him where the key was and that I would check in on them periodically.


From then on, Jay was sedated until the next morning before they took the tube out (extubated him).  After he was intubated, they moved him up to the ICU.  L. left once they had him up there, and I promised to keep him updated on Jay’s status.  Once Jay was in the ICU, they wanted to put a central line in him.  I agreed to it, knowing that he’d had one before.  Meanwhile, I’m waiting and waiting to be let back into the room to see him.  They’d kicked me out right after they brought him up.  Then they had  a problem getting the central line in because his veins were partially occluded (probably from past scar tissue from past central lines), so they wanted to put a pic line in.  I agreed to that (again, he’s had one before).  So finally after all of that, hours later, I was able to go into his room and start answering the usual questions from the nurse (meds, medical history, etc.).  She felt bad that I had had to wait for so long (and hadn’t gotten to go eat any lunch), and gave me a complimentary card for $ 7 credit in the hospital cafeteria.  I didn’t use it until the next day. 


By around 3:00 or so, I decided to head back to the house and check on the A/C guys and eat something.  Jay was sedated and breathing better, so I knew nothing was going to change any time soon.  I’d already spoken to Jay’s parents and his sister several times during the day.  I knew Jay’s dad was trying to find someone to drive down with him, but hadn’t found anyone yet.  At home, everything was going fine with the A/C replacement, so I hung out until they finished.  On the way back, I picked up a friend to sit with me and sent a text to his sister that I was heading back to the hospital.  She texted back that they were on their way there, had just gotten off the interstate. So I quickly texted back to park by the Patient Discharge area and take the elevators up from there.  They stayed for a few hours.  I know it really bothered his sister to see Jay intubated, and then she saw that they had his arms strapped down to the bed.  I explained it was so that if he woke up, he wouldn’t try pulling the tubes out of his mouth.  Jay’s dad just took it all in stride.  He worked as a medic in the military back in the day, so he’s seen worse. 


Tuesday morning, I got back to the hospital in time for visiting hours to start at 8am.  They had taken Jay off the sedative, and he was starting to come around.  His breathing was much better, and they talked about extubating him that morning.  By mid-morning they did.  He doesn’t remember anything from that morning though.  I would later have to repeat almost everything I had told him that morning:  how he’d gotten to the hospital, my calling his work, the A/C guys, his sister & dad coming the day before… Later that day, they took out the catheter from his penis.  My friend and her husband came by to visit before going to their childbirth class.  By then, the hospital had gotten back the MRSA results on Jay, and he had tested positive again, so visitors had to suit up in “protective gear”.  Such a weird practice at the hospital.  We were told that he would probably move out of ICU that day.  Of course, it didn’t happen.  There had been some concern about his kidney because his creatinine level had gone up from the day before.  It had been 1.7 when he was in the ER Monday morning, but was 2.1 in the ICU Tuesday morning.  The nephrologist was pretty sure it was because of all the drugs and stuff they’d put through him in the past 24 hours, but they wanted to be sure. So they pushed a lot of fluids.


Wednesday morning, his creatinine was back down to 1.7, and they moved him to a regular room.  He spent 24 hours in there, and got to go home on Thursday.  We already had an appointment with the nephrologist for Friday, so we just set up an appointment with his primary for follow up on his breathing.  On Friday, the nephrologist was quite surprised that Jay had gotten out of the hospital so quickly.  He was able to look at his x-rays and whatnot from the hospital.  He said that usually an asthma attack that bad has people staying in the hospital for a couple of weeks.  Even better, his creatinine on the last day in the hospital was at 1.3. 


This asthma attack was the worst one that Jay has ever had.  And I have said many times over the past few years, that it’s not the diabetes that’s going to kill him, it’s the asthma.  It almost did.  Jay has said several times since that day, that he thought for sure he was not going to make it; that he was going to die.  He said he prayed and prayed to God, while standing, bent over, outside Target, to not let him go this way, to keep him alive.  And He did.

If my son does have asthma, can being on adderall hurt him more? – adderall helped my asthma


My son doc treats asthma. It is also the adderall for ADD. He has great difficulty in breathing, when he started basketball pactice. Can anyone give me some advice? He did not give up basketball because he loves both. Is it something in the school, the gymnasium, serving what will be? Any advice would be helpful.
