Can you die from asthma/

I normally don’t like to use other people’s words to say something I want to say, yet I was reading the comments to this post over at MyAsthmaCentarl.com and the conversation ended up with the question many asthmatics ask:  Can you die of asthma?

James Thompson, MD, who happens to be a fellow asthma experts (well, he’s a well established asthma doctor, so he’s actually far more expert than I’ll ever be), gave an answer so brilliant that I couldn’t possibly word it better, so I wont.  Dr.Thompson’s answer to this question is:

If I were forced to give a one word answer I would say, “Yes”. Fortunately I can elaborate and tell you that although asthma can be fatal, the majority of people with the diagnosis of asthma do not die. In the early 1990s there were more than 5000 deaths per year attributed to asthma in the United States. Data from the about three years ago approximated about 4000 deaths annually (and falling). The bad news is that there are still people that die from asthma. Furthermore, the more than 20 million people that have asthma in this country are more affected by the impact of the disease on their quality of life.

 Mortality and morbidity (in other words death and poor quality of life) are greatly reduced when asthma management is appropriate. Well controlled asthma leads to minimal impairment from breathing problems no limitations on activity, and a duration of life that is equal to someone who does not have asthma.

 So, yes you can die from asthma, but good asthma management can prevent it.

I got this for my 6yr old daughter she has asthma and allergies. The doctors wanted to keep her on flovent but she had bad side effects on it so I kept her away from it there are no other options for children other than inhalers and steriods not a fan of either at the moment so I had to figure out another plan. I searched it online and came across this, I was skeptical at first but thought it was worth the try. She does half a tube once daily, its tasteless which is great no fighting to take it! It does take awhile before you start noticing anything. I could tell there was less wheezing, heavy breathing and needing her nebulizer daily after about a month I will continue to buy it for her until they come up with something better than steriods and bad side effected inhalers. I would recommend this for anyone who wants an alternative but please don’t throw out your regular medicine before trying this for awhile cause that would just be stupid.

Dog saved owner from life-threatening asthma attack

A hero dog saved the life of his owner after she had collapsed at her home, by pressing her medical alert alarm button. Ben, a three-year-old fox terrier-chihuahua cross, repeatedly stepped on the button with his paw, after Gina Barratt, 62, was struck down with a severe asthma attack at home and became very ill. Mrs Barratt, of Bideford, Devon, was alone in her home and unable to reach the phone.

Because of her poor health she had an emergency alarm button installed which is monitored at a control centre in Sidmouth. But following the attack she was too weak to untangle it from her clothing. Mrs Barratt said: ‘That particular day my alarm button got stuck inside my fleece, but Ben is so wonderful. He knows when I am having an attack and he jumped up and pressed it.’

‘Thank goodness I am here to talk about it. When I’m that ill I cannot even get to the phone. I keep wondering what would have happened if I hadn’t had the button and Ben there.’ The alarm button call was picked up by Tracey Morgan at the Home Safeguard call centre in Sidmouth, which is linked in to the Red Button Tarka Emergency Helpline.

Karen Witney, manager of the Red Button Tarka Emergency Helpline, said: ‘It is a very satisfying job and each time I hear a story of how the button has helped someone I am delighted. This really is a fantastic story and I am so pleased that Mrs Barratt is with us to thank Ben and Tracey today.’ Mrs Barratt took Ben along to the Home Safeguard call centre in Sidmouth to thank those who had helped her. She added: ‘Tracey was a gem and so once I was well enough I wanted to come here in person with Ben and give her my thanks.’
